Education Learning Gradient: Foundational learning progression across countries

March 10, 2026

This dashboard is one of two in the Education Learning Gradient series, which presents estimates of foundational reading and numeracy outcomes using the same data and analytical approach applied in the Learning starts here: Which children are gaining foundational skills? story. Results are shown for individual countries and groups of countries, allowing users to explore how learning outcomes evolve across grades and grade bands.

The dashboard focuses on learning trajectories from Grades 1 to 8, highlighting how foundational reading and numeracy skills develop across the school years. Users can compare patterns across countries, regions, and income groups, and examine differences across population subgroups.

Users can customize how results are displayed by choosing between median or mean estimates, viewing weighted or unweighted results, and displaying either raw values or smoothed trends. These options allow users to examine both observed results and broader patterns in learning outcomes by country. Filters further enable exploration across population groups, regions, and income levels, as well as adjustments to sample size thresholds and data completeness.

The other dashboard of the Education Learning gradient series dashboard explores wealth-related gaps in foundational skills..

The workflow underpinning the figures used for the scrolly-telling is reproducible and supported by a public GitHub repository containing the R scripts used to retrieve the data and run the application.
