CRVS profiles

An effective civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system is one that records all births, deaths and causes of death. Vital statistics may also include marriages, divorces and adoptions. Birth registration establishes the existence of the child under law and provides the foundation for safeguarding many of the child’s civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. In addition to providing children with their rights to a legal identity, a reliable and up-to-date civil register provides continuous demographic and health data. These data can shape investments in areas such as new schools construction, expenditures for social protection programmes, or allocating health care and social workers to areas lacking those resources.
