9 Facts about Children on the Move

February 26, 2024

Curious to know how many children are on the move today? Wondering about their countries of origin, countries of destination and their primary migration routes? Interested to learn how many of them have been forcibly displaced? This brochure – a product of the International Data Alliance for Children on the MOVE (IDAC) – answers these questions and more.

Using the latest available data, 9 Facts about Children on the Move shares a critical set of data visualizations, succinct analyses and top-line messages about migrant and displaced children today. It highlights key characteristics of this population of children, including estimates of how many children have migrated or been displaced, the reasons for their movement – including forced displacement – and the patterns of their movement, whether internally or across borders.

Targeting researchers, policymakers and organizations engaged in migration and development, this resource aims to serve as an advocacy tool to ensure the rights of children on the move are included in policies and programming. It joins the growing body of IDAC’s resources that enhance data visibility and illuminate the intricate landscape of children’s migration and displacement, including Children on the Move: Key terms, definitions and concepts and Data and Statistics for Children on the Move: Essential sources and good practices.
