You don\u2019t know what the weather will be, so it\u2019s difficult to know whether you\u2019ll need warm clothes and rainboots or light clothes and sandals. If you have a large suitcase, it\u2019s easy to throw in both and prepare for all the possibilities. With a small suitcase though, the items you pick matter much more. Mistakes are costlier, so it\u2019s crucial to make the right choices.*<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is just the challenge that UNICEF teams face when it comes to investing in data for children. We know we need data to produce results for children<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">we have many options available to add to our data suitcase. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unlimited resources<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we could take <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more chances, packing a large suitcase with all the available options.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> With <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">finite<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> resources though, we\u2019ve got to have a solid plan <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to make sure we\u2019re investing in the most important data and systems.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the past three years, UNICEF teams around the globe have been looking across their data landscapes to identify the most promising investments that would help us turn data into practical results for children. More than 20 offices have developed Data for Children Action Plans<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">choosing the best options for their specific needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and launch<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> their plans. In Lesotho, for example, the team moved right from planning into action, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adding more data technical assistance for government and piloting new ways of sharing data.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These plans have varied tremendously by context but have also included some common themes. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Data-for-Children-Frequently-Found-Challenges-in-CO-Action-Plans.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">frequently found challenges<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(.pdf)<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> identified in the plans have informed many new investments at a global level. From new guidance to practical support and increased staffing, we\u2019re investing in the areas that can deliver the most impact for many contexts at once.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve also used this experience to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> create<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/strategic-planning-for-data-investments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">new tools that can help every UNICEF team plan their own data investments<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ranging f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rom a simple checklist to a comprehensive strategy process, the resources offer several ways to help teams decide how to expend their data resources most efficiently.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While designed with UNICEF in mind, the tools are also readily adaptable for government counterparts, other UN agencies, or NGO teams that are interested in making smarter data investments.
