But they risk being among its biggest victims, as children\u2019s lives are nonetheless being changed in profound ways. All children, of all ages, and in all countries, are being affected, in particular by the socio-economic impacts and, in some cases, by mitigation measures that may inadvertently do more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the harmful effects of this pandemic will not be distributed equally. They are expected to be most damaging for children in the poorest countries, and in the poorest neighbourhoods, and for those in already disadvantaged or vulnerable situations.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n<div id=\"poverty\" class=\"alignfull wp-block-flag-infogram flag-infogram\">\r\n    <div class=\"flag-infogram__inner\">\r\n                                    <div class=\"flag-infogram__content\">\r\n                    <div class=\"flag-infogram__left\">\r\n                                                    <div class=\"flag-infogram__heading\">\r\n                                Pushing more households and children into poverty                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__text\">\r\n                                <p>As families lose their sources of income due to COVID-19 and the global economy has been plunged into a recession, more households are falling into monetary poverty. For the poorest families, including those who do not have access to social protection, the situation is dire.<\/p>\n                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__more\">\r\n                                <div class=\"flag-infogram__more__text\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\r\n                                    <p>In 2020, it was projected that the global socioeconomic crisis caused by the pandemic could push 142 million more children into monetary poor households in developing countries. Thus, the total number of children living in monetary poor households in developing countries could reach just over 725 million in the absence of any mitigating policies. Nearly two-thirds of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, as vaccines, masks and other interventions eased the risk and spread of the pandemic, economics have started to recover (albeit unevenly). width: 100%; height: 400px;\"><\/iframe>                    <\/div>\r\n        <button class=\"infogram-modal__close infogram-card__collapse\">\r\n            <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Close Infogram<\/span>\r\n        <\/button>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/dialog>\r\n<\/div>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n                <\/div>\r\n                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__content\">\r\n                    <div class=\"flag-infogram__left\">\r\n                                                    <div class=\"flag-infogram__heading\">\r\n                                Intensifying hardships of poor children                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__text\">\r\n                                <p>Since children experience poverty differently than adults, it is also important to assess their material shortcomings and potential deprivations and to\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/measuring-and-monitoring-child-poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">measure their poverty multidimensionally<\/a> rather than just through income alone.<\/p>\n                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__more\">\r\n                                <div class=\"flag-infogram__more__text\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\r\n                                    <p>In 2020, it was projected that approximately 150 million additional children would be living in multidimensional poverty \u2013 without access to education, health care, housing, nutrition, sanitation or water \u2013 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/impact-of-covid-19-on-multidimensional-child-poverty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis jointly carried out by Save the Children and UNICEF<\/a>. Estimates derived from data from more than 70 countries indicate that around 47-48 per cent of children were severely deprived of at least one of these critical needs before the coronavirus pandemic even hit. Although the revised projections, based on schools reopening and health centers not being overburden in most countries, do not paint as a dire picture, the situation for children living in multidimensional poverty is still expected to be worse than prior to the pandemic by around 100 million children &#8211; Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, 23 countries \u2013 home to nearly 405 million schoolchildren \u2013 are yet to fully open schools, with many schoolchildren at risk of dropping out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n                            <\/div>\r\n                                                                            <div class=\"flag-infogram__more\">\r\n                                <div class=\"flag-infogram__more__text\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\r\n                                    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furthermore,\u00a0 nearly 147 million children missed more than half of their in-person schooling 2 years into the pandemic, with more than 27 million <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of them having missed at least three-quarters of in-person schooling. This amounts to 2 trillion hours of lost in-person learning globally. Emerging evidence shows that many children did not even return to school when their classrooms reopened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the peak of the pandemic, 188 countries imposed countrywide school closures, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/eduview-education-dashboard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">affecting more than 1.6 billion children and youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Even prior to this, however, children\u2019s learning was in crisis, and the pandemic has only sharpened these inequities, hitting school children in poorer countries particularly hard. Globally, many schools lack the resources to invest in digital learning, and many children from poorer households do not have internet access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At least one in three of the world\u2019s schoolchildren \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/remote-learning-reachability-factsheet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">463 million children globally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 were unable to access remote learning when COVID-19 shuttered their schools. And the actual number of students who cannot be reached is likely significantly higher than this estimate. In many situations, despite remote learning policies and the presence of the necessary technology at home, children may be unable to learn due to skills gaps among their teachers or a lack of parental support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though national governments around the world have been quick to implement remote learning, new health protocols and reopening plans, these policies have varied widely based on each country\u2019s wealth. Even short disruptions in children\u2019s schooling can have long-lasting negative impacts due to factors including the lack of structured programmes for catching up. In the past, school closures have led to an increase in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/topic\/child-protection\/child-marriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">child marriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and child labour which often prevent children from continuing their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quite simply, we are looking at a nearly insurmountable scale of loss to children\u2019s schooling. While the disruptions to learning must end, just reopening schools is not enough.
